Tocasierra Spa & Salon at Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort

08/15/2011 by Samantha McIntosh

I recently celebrated my one-year wedding anniversary and as a special pre-celebratory treat to myself, decided to head to Tocasierra Spa & Salon at Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort in Phoenix for a little beauty boost.

Tocasierra Spa is tucked away east of the main lobby with its own parking lot access. It can be a little tricky to find if you haven’t been before so don’t hesitate to ask the valet staff for directions the spa -– I did, and they were more than helpful.

As I entered the spa I was greeted by rich hardwood floors, warm earth tones and an elegant boutique. The warm yet contemporary feel of the reception area presents an inviting atmosphere to get you in the spa state of mind. My visit started with a tour of the waiting area and locker room, where I slipped into my lush robe and spa slippers. As I headed to the relaxation room to wait for my Tocasierra Signature Hot Oil Massage, I grabbed a chilled glass of water and sunk into a comfy chair.

My therapist, John, who has been in the spa industry for 15 plus years (he has a great story you should ask about!), began the treatment by explaining the different elements that would take place over the next 80 minutes. First, an Ayurvedic Scalp Treatment — a scalp massage with a luscious burst of nutrients for hair that you will want to let set for as long as possible to get the most benefit, so avoid scheduling any happy hours or shopping trips after your visit. Following my extremely blissful scalp treatment was a paraffin hand therapy and hot towel foot service.

With a towel wrapped around my head, baggies on my hand and towels on my feet, I must have been quite the sight, but none of that mattered once the body treatment began. Before the treatment I was given the option of unscented, lavender, harmony or stress management oil fragrances. As I carefully examined each fragrance I settled on harmony. The scent was light and subtle — just enough to help guide my mind and body into a calming place to absorb and appreciate the entire experience.

As frequently happens during my visits to the spa, time quickly escaped and the treatment was over before I knew it but not an inch of my body was forgotten. Everything from head to toe (literally!) were even equal attention — even those stubborn glutes that host so much of my stress. As I stood up from the table to slip back into my robe, every part of me, even my hair, felt like it was floating (maybe my hair actually was just a little after that oil treatment).

After the treatment, John guided me back to the women’s locker room to take advantage of the many amenities available for your post-treatment beauty routine. Having made plans for dinner afterward (I spoke from experience earlier when I said don’t plan anything after the hair treatment), I reluctantly hopped in one of the showers and washed the oil treatment from my hair. I spent a few minutes at the vanity dabbling in the handful of beauty tools and products provided by the spa and sadly said goodbye to my mini spa getaway.

On my way out, I made a quick stop into the salon, and was greeted by a genuinely friendly staff. I don’t know what it is about a salon that made me so happy — the fun personalities, lively conversations or fabulous products. Definitely a fun diversion to keep in mind for future visits.

With lifted spirits (and hair thanks to my teasing comb), I checked out of the spa with an extra skip in my step as I headed to dinner.

The intimate atmosphere of the Tocasierra Spa & Salon combined with my magnificent treatment and fun atmosphere of the salon was the perfect way to kick off a romantic weekend with my husband. The only way it could have possibly been better was if I had booked a couples massage and let him in on the fun. But hey, a girl’s got to get some alone time in on occasion too, right?
